Why focus on education?
I firmly believe that Africa and particularly Kenya has all it needs to be self-sustaining in all respects - whether social including health, economic and trade. Its issues like many African countries lie in the lack of internal infrastructure investment that is as a result of corruption in government.
Despite the issues with the recent drought, Kenya can feed itself but to take advantage of all of its natural resources it will need a freely elected and accountable government and a population that is well informed by a free press. A better-educated population will drive those changes and it starts in a small way with the children that this Charity educates. It starts to tackle root cause, which is a long journey, but one that will be sustainable. Whilst the G8 etc need to ensure the playing field for trade is levelled, African countries and their administrations need to take responsibility for ensuring that their countries can realise their potential.
This may take generations but it starts with charities like TEACH hoping to develop the massively untapped human capital in Africa.
