Steve Adams from Barclays in Barclaycard International, Northampton, recently received the ‘Exceptional Volunteer’ Award at the Barclays Regional Chairman’s Awards for outstanding contributions to the community and diversity. The award was presented at a ceremony recently at the Playbox Theatre in Warwick. As a winner, he received a cheque for £250 for a charity of his choice.
Launched in 2000, the annual awards are held in recognition of Barclays employees who have made an outstanding contribution to their local community or to those who have actively participated in helping the bank achieve its goal of becoming a truly diverse organisation.
Steve has chosen to allocate his £250 donation to the charity he set up to support the Mukuru Primary School in Nairobi to enable them to continue to build the bursary fund which will pay the Secondary School fees of the top performing children to allow them to continue their education. ‘As Chairman of the Charity, I am delighted with the donation, on our terms a relatively small amount but in the slums of Nairobi it is more than 6 times the average annual family income and will cover 1 years fees for one child.’
Steve said, “I am both delighted and honored to have won this award and to be one of so many Barclays employees who give up their time so freely to support charitable and voluntary organizations.”
Steve now goes on to the National Awards which will take place in London on 15th June 2006.
